2.1 "The Rock Cycle" Flashcards
a naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals in as organic matter
rock
the continual process by which a rock forms, changes from one type to another, is destroyed, and forms again by geological process
the rock cycle
The process in which water, wind, ice, and heat break down rock.
weathering
The process by which sediment is removed form its original source.
erosion
The process in which sediment moved by erosion is dropped and comes to rest.
deposition
The movement with in the Earth that causes rocks inside the Earth to be moved to the Earth’s surface.
uplift
Grains of sand and other sediment are eroded from hills and mountains and are washed down a river to the ocean. Over time the sediment forms thick layers on the ocean floor. Eventually, the grains of sediment are compacted and cemented together.
sedimentary rock
When large pieces of the Earth’s crust collide, some of the rock is forced downward. A great depths, intense heat and pressure heat and squeeze the sedimentary rock to change it.
metamorphic rock
The hot liquid that forms when rock partially or completely melts.
magma
Magma that rose to the Earth’s crust and has cooled and solidified.
igneous rock
Igneous rock that weathers and wheres way into grains of sand and clay.
sediment
The chemical makeup of a rock; described either the minerals or other materials in the rock.
composition
The quality of a rock that is based on sized, shapes, and the positions of the rock’s grains.
