2.1 Structure And Bonding Flashcards
What is a compound
A compound is a substance made from different elements chemically joined together
How many elements are there roughly ?
There are just over 100.
How can the elements in the compound aluminium oxide be separated?
Electrolysis
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms.
What is a ionic bond?
Ionic bonding occurs between positive and negative ions, which attract each other and bind together to form ionic compounds.
What is a metallic bond?
The metallic bond is the force of attraction between free electrons and metal ions.
What are the properties of covalent bonds?
Gases, liquids, or solids (made of molecules)
Low melting and boiling points
Poor electrical conductors
Many soluble in nonpolar liquids but not in water
What are the properties of ionic bonds?
Crystalline solids (made of ions)
High melting and boiling points
Conduct electricity when melted
Many soluble in water but not in nonpolar liquid
What does non-polar mean?
A compound that is non-ionic or does not dissociate into ions.
What does dissociate mean?
(with reference to a molecule) split into separate smaller atoms, ions, or molecules.
What are simple molecules?
Simple molecules only contain a few atoms held together by strong covalent bonds. An example is carbon dioxide (CO2), the molecules of which contain, one atom of carbon bonded with two atoms of oxygen.
What are properties of simple molecules?
They have low melting and boiling points because of there weak intermolecular forces break down easily. They are also non-conductive because substances with weak molecular structures don’t conduct electricity this is because they do not have any free electrons or overall electric charge.
