Q

Large vs small strongylus

A

Large strongylus have extra intestinal migration.
From the intestines —> pierce intestinal wall —> bloodstream —> cranial mesenteric artery (Strongylus vulgaris) where its buries itself in the artery —> nodule where its gonna moult to L4 and will be dormant for a long time, this module can call thrombosis

Large and small strongylus can’t be differentiated by eggs. L3 can be differentiated (number of gut cells!!)

Q

Difference in numbers of gut cels in different L3 strongylus

A

big amount of gut cells -> large strobgylus

32 -> Strongylus vulgaris
20 -> Strongylus edentatus
16 -> Strongylus equinus
8 -> small strongylus

Predilection site of Strongylus edentatus larvae is peritoneum

17
Q

Number of teeth on different species of Strongylus

A
  • Strongylus vulgaris* - 2
    Strongylus equinus - 4
    Strongylus edentatus - 0
18
Q

Life cycle of small strongylus

A

No extra intestinal migration -> less pathogenic than the large strongylus

In the caecum L3 will penetrate into the intestinal wall, stay dormant -> moult, become adults

19
Q
A

Small strongylus. Larvae and adults

  • Cattle -> O. radiatum
