2.1- Respiratory System Flashcards
Gross anatomy
is the study of the organs and structures of the human body visible to the naked eye.
Hilum
is known as the “root” of the lung. This is where the pulmonary vessels and bronchi enter each lung
Pleurae
are membranes that cover the surface of the lung and the cavity surrounding the lungs.
The pleurae also help to pull the lungs open with the chest wall during inhalation.
-Visceral Pleura
-parietal Pleura
-Plural space
visceral pleura, parietal pleura, pleural space
- directly covers the lungs
- covers the surfaces surrounding the lungs: the rib cage, diaphragm, and mediastinum.
- he space that is formed between the pleurae
3 Main functions of the respiratory system
1) air conduction, 2) air filtration, and 3) exchange of gases/ respiration.
Air flow to the lungs
Air moves through the nasal cavity–>
pharynx –>larynx –> trachea, –> bronchi–> the lungs.
Along the way, air is filtered so that it is free of debris, warmed, and humidified. By the time the air reaches the lungs, it is at body temperature and saturated with water.
Nasal Cavities/ fossae
composed of bone and cartilage, are made up of several parts. The left and right fossae are separated by the nasal septum.
Vestibule
composed of bone and cartilage, are made up of several parts. The left and right fossae are separated by the nasal septum.
