2.1 into to population study guide Flashcards
Population
Group of individuals of the same species in the same place at the same time.
Population Density
The number of organisms per unit or area
Population distribution
How spread out a population is in a given area
What is the difference between: Clumped, Uniform, and Random distribution?
Clumped means that there are groups of the organism spread throughout the area
Uniform means that the organisms are evenly spread out in the area.
Random means that the organisms are just where ever they happen to be and there is nothing predictable and there is no pattern.
Why would a population be in these patterns?
Clumped because they would help each other fend off threats
Uniform because there could be a lot of animals and little space
Random because some plants have seeds blown by the wind and there is no telling how far or where those seeds get planted.
How do you calculate population density?
Population Density= The number of organisms/the land area
A biologist collected 50 liters of pond water and counted 10 mosquito larvae. How many larvae would you estimate to be in that pond in the total number of water in the pond was 80,000 liters?
16000 larvae
