- sudden onset
- dependent position makes it worse
- swelling or puffiness of tissue directly under your skin
- stretched or shiny skin
- skin that retains a dimple after being pressed for several seconds

functions of lymphatic system
- absorbs excess fluid, prtn, toxin, and debris from interstitial space
- recovers and returns substances to the blood circulation that have escaped into tissues
- regulateds the fluid volume and pressure in a tissue
- transports lymphocytes and hormones throughout the body
- carries fatty acids absorbed from small intestines to blood circulation

results from disruption from surgery, trauma, infection etc.
primary can be congenital, can be later onset
stage I lymphedema
disappears after the limb has rested in elevation for several hrs
stage II lymphedema
does not reduce by elevating limb and tissue becomes harder and pits
stage III lymphedema
elephantitis
extreme swelling, thickening of skin and production of wart-like protrusions, tissue is brawny and fibrotic
s/s lymphedema
- feeling of heaviness, tightness, or fullness of limb
- pain, tired, or achiness feeling
- dry skin
- sores or blisters that leak clear/yellowish fluid
- hard, thick nails
- firm limb and/or pitting of skin
- color changes to skin
