2.1 Design Methods And Processes Flashcards
What is user centred design
An approach to design that ensures your product will be easy to use
What needs to be considered in user centred design
Needs, wants and values of the end user within every element of the design cycle
The user centred design process is…
Iterative, led by the user and developer through user centred evaluation
Iterative design
The user centred design process is an iterative cycle where every step is evaluated against the initially identified requirements of the users and iterated until these requirements are met.
How might a designer carry out primary research?
Observing their target market through user trails or a focus group
Surveys, interviews, questionairs
What is meant by the term iterative design process?
- Constantly changing process based around the users wants and needs. Circular and continuous improvement, evaluated and designed even after release
User-centred designers normally work to the principles set out in the international usability standard ISO 13407. Explain the principles of ISO13407?
- Product designed around users wants and needs
- Constantly adapting around the user
- Multi skilled people working on the product
- Ittierative process
- Refined by user centered evaluation
Identify the 4 main consumer needs relating to user centred design?
- Emotional needs
- Physical needs
- Intellectual needs
- Values
State three reasons why a designer may use a focus group?
Easy way to collect information from several people Fast way to get information
Cost effective
Why do designers use immersive techniques when carrying out research?
So they can understand the full experience of the user, this helps them to make products tailored to the users needs
Explain the difference between the emotional, intellectual, sociological and physical needs of a customer, use examples in your answer. 8 Marks
Emotional needs is finding out the likes and dislikes of a user and creating an attatchment with a product, like a family airloom being passed down generations.
Intellectual needs is creating a product that will be simple and easy to be understood by a user, this is like creating the Iphone which is targeted at young adults which grasp the idea of how to use the porduct easily compared to the older generation who tend to be slower with the device and it doesn’t target their intellectual needs.
Sociological needs is where the users values in life is taken into account, like if the user is a avid environmentalist they wont buy products created/ packaged in plastic so the product will have to be made out of a eco friendly material.
The physical needs of the user is like how heavy a poduct is so they can hold it. For example they cant make a door heavy to push as the average person needs to be able to comfortably push the door open.
Why is anthropometric data an important area of research?
So that the product can be created that is assessable to the 5-95% of people.
This means that a large amount of people are able to use the product which leads to a large amount of customers compared to few if they product was just created for the 5% percentile of people.
