Self Concept
A person’s self-concept has been defined as the individual’s perception of his or her own characteristics, his or her abilities or failings, his or her appearance, and the total organisation of characteristics which he or she perceives as distinguishing him or her as an individual (Ryan, 1966:82).
Self Concept relationship towards clothing
The relationship between a person’s self-concept and his or her clothing works both ways. While clothing plays an important part in establishing the self-concept, the self-concept influences a person’s choice of clothing.
Public Self model
On a public level fashion is a multibillion dollar industry that very deliberately offers fantasies to consumers via dress. Fashion is a public expression that everyone can see and a collective fantasy on a societal level. This collective fantasy called fashion is a creative outlet; it allows consumers to have fun in a culturally sanctioned way. Ralph Lauren polo look of traditional polo styled clothing and weathered leathered denim. Very few people actually play polo but you can still live the fantasy of being a wealthy person who plays polo for leisure while your investment make money by purchasing ralph Lauren clothing.
Private level self
Private fantasies can include memories of playing dress up as a child, as an adult wearing Victoria Secret lingerie for personal fantasies.
Secret level
Not easily revealed. Sexual fantasies that involves dress. Heterosexual male crossdressers.
