2.1 Classification and Biodiversity Flashcards
What is a morphological adaptation?
A structural adaptation where there is a physical difference in the organism.
What is a behavioural adaptation?
An adaptation that changes have an organism responds to its environment.
Why do scientists use a binomial naming system?
So that scientists around the world can understand the species of organism being discussed which eliminates any language barriers and confusion.
What are 7 layers of the binomial naming system?
Kingdom (King) Phylum (Prawn) Class (Curry) Order (Or) Family (Fat) *Genus (Greasy) *Species (Sausages)
What is biodiversity?
A variety of species in a certain habitat/ ecosystem.
What is selective breading and its impact on biodiversity?
When organisms are only bread when it contains a desired gene.
The organism grown only have selected genes which reduces the ‘gene pool’ and biodiversity.
What is monoculture and its impact on biodiversity?
Monoculture is when only one desired organism is seeded/bread usually to increase profits.
There is only one species of organism which reduces biodiversity
What are the ways of maintaining biodiversity?
- Breeding and release programs
- Conservation of habitats
- Creation of new habitats
- Control of invasive species
- Laws that protect a species/ habitat
- Control of pollution and other threats to the environment.
What is the equation for capture-recapture?
N=MC/R M= Marked on first visit C= Captured on second visit R= Marked individuals found on second visit N= Estimated population size
What is the name of the competition between different species?
Interspecific Competition
What do flowering plants use to reproduce?
Runners
What do non-flowering plants use to reproduce?
Spores
What are the ways of gauging population size?
Capture recapture
Transects
Quadrats
How big are quadrats usually?
1m²
