2.1 Atomic structure and Isotopes Flashcards
What subatomic particles consist in the nucleus?
Protons and neutrons
What subatomic particle is in the atom but outside the nucleus?
Electrons
What is the charge of a proton?
1+
What is the charge of a neutron?
0
What is the charge of an electron?
-1
What is the mass of a proton?
1
What is the mass of a neutron?
1
What is the mass of an electron?
1/1836
Why is the overall charge of an atom 0?
Because the positive charge of the protons are cancelled out by the negative charge of electrons
What does the atomic number in the periodic table represent?
The amount of protons (which is also the same number of electrons)
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different masses.
How can isotopes be represented?
By naming the element and the number (oxygen-16)
Do isotopes affect chemical reactions?
No, because neutrons have no effect on chemical reactions
What is an ion?
A charged atom (number of electrons are different from the protons)
What is a cation?
A positive ion, has fewer electrons than protons
