2.1 Atom Flashcards
If elements have the same number of electrons in their outer shell, what does this mean?
They will react in similar ways
How is the number of shells in an element connected to its reactivity?
The more shells it has, it’ll be less reactive as each shell gets further and further away from the nucleus, meaning they are less attracted to it. This means it is less reactive
What is the relative mass of protons and neutrons?
1
What is the electrons’ mass compared to protons/neutrons?
Mass of 2000x smaller
Generally, what is the size of an atoms radius?
0.1 nanometers
What is the size of the nucleus in comparison to the atom’s radius?
10,000x smaller
What is the symbol of an element called on the periodic table?
Nuclear Symbol
What is the smaller number on each element called and what does it represent?
Atomic number - it shows how many protons/electrons there are
What is the bigger number on the element and what does it represent?
Mass number - shows the total number of neutrons and protons
Which particle determines what element an atom is? (Neutrons, Protons, or Electrons)
Protons
What do we call an atom that has a positive or negative charge?
An ion
