2.1 - anatomy of the respiratory system (workbook) Flashcards
what are the intercostal muscles innervated by?
intercostal nerves
when are internal and innermost intercostal muscles used?
during forced expiration as quiet expiration is passive
what is the neurovascular bundle?
intercostal vein, artery, nerve (VAN)
where is the neurovascular bundle found?
intercostal groove of rib - inferior section of superior rib of an IC space (lower border of rib)
between internal & innermost intercostal muscles
what is important in carrying out a pleural aspiration or insertion of a chest drain?
needle should be inserted at the upper border of the inferior rib to avoid injury
what do intercostal arteries supply?
the intercostal muscles, parietal pleura, overlying skin
what does each intercostal space contain in terms of arteries?
anterior intercostal artery (except floating ribs)
which anastomose with posterior intercostal artery
where do the anterior intercostal arteries arise from?
internal thoracic artery (branch of subclavian) & its continuation, musculophrenic artery
where does the posterior intercostal arteries arise from?
aorta and the superior intercostal artery (from costo-cervical trunk)
