What does it mean to control the narrative?
It means that they decided what it would look like, how they wanted it portrayed to the audience, and the intended feelings from the audience.
What are the Rings of Narrative? How are they related to Warden’s Rings?
- character (people/ groups of people),
- values(good/evil, right/wrong at the same time; value gives meaning),
- plot (sequence of events organized to tell the story),
- dénouement (the takeaway at the end of the story)
- worldview or meaning (statements about reality).
What is Aristotle’s definition of metaphor in his Rhetoric? How did this definition ruin rhetoric over the course of its 2400-year history?
“A metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison.” Aristotle ruined rhetoric bc of his definition by separating literal and figurative meanings.

Explain the visual rhetoric of commercials, narrative film and documentaries. How does each make use of images to effect pathos, ethos or logos? Explain.
Commercial - kid darth vadar ~ 7 fold commercial form, POV character shift. Narrative film - every scene must carry the story, actor must know the objective for every scene, these objectives create meaning. Documentaries - POV shifts to get full view and understanding
How has the Western view of virtue evolved throughout history?
The Enlightenment led the West to value wealth through human power over nature. Today, in the West, many respect success and technological prowess more than virtue.
Explain how Confucian culture approaches virtue?
Based on family, long-term relationships, hard work, relationship, loyalty, and harmony.
