2.1, 2.2, 2.3 Mitosis and its importance Flashcards
What does the nucleus contain?
Genetic information
What form is genetic information found in?
chromosomes
What do chromosomes contain?
coils of DNA
What is a short section of DNA that codes for a protein and controls characteristics called?
a gene
What do chromosomes carry alot of?
genes
How many chromosomes are in each cell of the body?
23 pairs
How many chromosomes are in sex cells (gametes)?
23 chromosomes
What is the cell cycle?
a series of steps that the cell has to undergo in order to divide e.g mitosis is a step in this cycle (the stage when the cell divides)
What is stage 1 of the cell cycle?
Interphase
What is stage 2 of the cell cycle?
Mitosis
What is stage 3 of the cell cycle?
Cytokinesis
What happens in (the stage) interphase?
In this stage the cell grows, organelles (e.g. mitochondria, ribosomes) grow and increase in number, the synthesis of protein occurs, DNA is replicated and energy stores are increased.
What happens in (the stage) mitosis?
The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell and cell fibres pull each chromosome of the ‘X’ to either side of the cell
What happens in (the stage) cytokinesis?
Two identical daughter cells form when the cytoplasm and cell membranes divide
What is cell division by mitosis in multicellular organisms useful for?
- growth
- development
- replacing damaged cells
