A
- most cruel sports had disappeared, apart from hunting and shooting from the gentry
- spectators now had to pay to watch
- sports events were held on saturdays, rather than of festival days
- upper classes bet money on horse racing and boxing, whilst the lower class took part
- more watching than participating

- pe was a part of all schools curricula
- grammar schools often ran competitive sports teams in the major sports

A
- gradual increase in leisure time and money meant that men played sport as well as watched
- space was at a premium and the lane that was available was heavily used

A
transport (both public and private) began to be much more available to everyone
this enabled am increase in numbers able to travel to participate in sport, as well as to spectate
