20.3 The Acid Dissociation Constant Ka Flashcards
What is the Acid Dissociation?
Ka=([H+][A-])/[HA]
What can Ka be used for?
Weak Acids
Effect on equilibrium with increased Ka value
Further equilibrium to the right
Effect on dissociation and acid strength with a larger Ka value
Increased dissociation, greater acid strength
What temperature are Ka values standardised at?
25C or 298K
What’s the problem with using Ka values
It’s difficult to compare numbers with negative indices
So converting it to pKa is more manageable
Calculating pKa?
-log(Ka)
Calculating Ka?
10^-pKa
Increased acid strength shows…?
effect on Ka, pKa and type of acid
Ka increases
pKa decreases
Monobasic
Decreased acid strength shows…?
effect on Ka, pKa and type of acid
Ka decreases
pKa increases
Tribasic
What can pKa values be used for?
to compare the strength of weak acids, particularly in biological systems
