20.1 Bronsted-Lowry Acids and Bases Flashcards
What is a Bronsted-Lowry Acid?
A ptoton donor
Dissociates and gives up H+ ions in solutions
Examples of Acids
HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4
What is a Bronsted-Lowry Base?
A proton acceptor
Dissociates and accepts H+ ions in solutions
Examples of Bases
NaOH, KOH, NH3
What are the products of HCl + H2O?
H3O+ (Hydronium ion) + Cl-
What does a conjugate acid-base pair contain?
Two species that can be interconverted by transfer of a proton, e.g. HCl & Cl-
Why is the Hydronium ion important?
It’s the active acid ingredient in any aqueous acid
What does monobasic, dibasic and tribasic acids refer to?
The total numberof hydrogen ions in the acid, replacese per molecule in an acid-base reaction
Examples of a monobasic acid
HCl, CH3COOH
Example of a dibasic acid
H2CO3
Example of a tribasic acid
H3BO3
What is a spectator ion?
Ions that don’t change during the reaction and can be cancelled out.
What is the active species from an acid?
H+
Redox reaction between dilute acid and metal equation
acid + metal –> salt + hydrogen
Neut : Acid + Carbonate products
salt + H2O + CO2
