201i - Camshaft & Follower Service Flashcards
How and why should lifters be stored once removed from engine?
In order and labeled for inspection and diagnosis purposes and to return them to their original location if reused.
What should be done after washing a camshaft to protect it?
Lightly coat it with oil or WD40 to prevent rust
What 5 things are camshafts visually inspected for?
- Scuffing
- Scoring
- Cracks
- Surface fatigue
- Discolouration
201i pg. 10
What methods could be used to check a camshaft for cracks?
- Dye check
- Magnetic particle
- Magnaflux (fluorescent magnetic particle)
201i pg. 11
How should camshaft journals be measured?
At A & B on both sides to determine:
- minimum outside diameter
- Wear
- Out of round
- taper
201i pg.12
With a camshaft out of the engine on wood blocks, what would you measure with a dial indicator on the journals as you rotate the camshaft?
Runout
201i pg.12
Binding or uneven camshaft bearing wear would indicate what regarding the camshaft?
A bent camshaft
201i pg.13
With the camshaft in the engine, what would you be measuring if you had a dial indicator on a lobe and rotated the lobe?
Camshaft lobe lift
201i. Pg.15
If you found one lifter to be worn beyond spec, what other components would you also replace?
All other lifters and camshaft
What worn component would allow a camshaft to flex during operation?
Worn camshaft bearings
201i. Pg.21
Worn camshaft bearings will cause what 3 things:
- Not support camshaft - will flex
- Increase journal to bearing oil clearance - decrease oil pressure
- Reduce oil flow to valve operating mechanism (on engines where it is supplied through cam bearings)
201i. Pg.21
What should a camshaft thrust bearing be inspected for?
Minimum thickness
Also: wear, scoring, cracks
201i pg.21
What should be used to ensure camshaft bearing oil holes are properly aligned?
Oil hole aligning tool
201i pg.26
What should be measured on the camshaft drive gears before disassembly?
Backlash
201i pg.4
Runout is measured to determine camshaft:
Straightness
201i pg.12
When measuring a cam lobe, you obtain the following dimensions:
Base circle 1.762”, Lobe Height 2.125”.
Determine lobe lift
Lobe height - base circle = lobe lift
2.125 - 1.762 = 0.363”
A roller lifter should be checked for: (3)
- Roller surface condition - wear, scoring
- Smooth roller operation - loose, rough, binding
- Play in bearing or pin
201i pg.18
What 2 precautions should be observed when pressing off a camshaft gear?
- Support the gear in the press
- Place a wood block on the floor to protect end of camshaft
201i
The camshaft drive gear should be checked for: (3)
- pitting
- cracks
- broken teeth
What 3 factors could cause insufficient camshaft end play?
- Thrust plate installed backwards
- Thrust plate misaligned
- Foreign material between thrust plate and cam or gear
201i pg.31
Fuel injector lobes are usually measured on what part of the lobe?
Opening ramp or rise side
201i pg.15
