Summarize the events of the 2011 London riots.
4th August 2011 - Mark Duggan shot by police, followed by 120 peaceful protesters outside Tottenham police station
6th-10th August 2011 - riots across London spread nationally (66 areas nationwide experience rioting)
What different factors can be named as causes of the riots?
- Ethnic tensions (racism in the met police)
- Inequalities and deprivation. Lack of economic opportunities
- Lack of political engagement and representation
- Regeneration and gentrification of Tottenham.
What were the initial impacts of the riots in London?
~200 households in London displaced due to damage of their property.
Damage to property and shops (ranges from smashed windows to arson and looting)
Deaths of 5 people.
In 2016 police in Tottenham recorded how many searches per 1000 of its black community?
55 searches per 1000 of its black community
More than 2x the rate amongst the white population.
Lead to accusations that the met criminalises young black men the most.
In 2008 those 18-24 accounted for what percentage of total unemployed?
30%.
Social mobility for young adults ground to halt.
Leads to repressed anger as lacking in opportunities - feel as though society and politics have let people down.
What are the differing views over the regeneration of the Tottenham area?
Locals fear the regeneration may gentrify the area-leading to their displacement. Accusations that the project is to ethnically cleanse the area.
However stakeholders believe the regeneration will make the area more profitable and attractive to investment.
What are the promised benefits of the regeneration project?
- More than 10,000 new high quality houses
- 5000 new jobs
-Improved transport system - improved public/green spaces → foster a sense of community.
