Brief history of WHO
during the renaissance - idea for international health cooperation was raised due to the spread of cholera and plague.
1348 Venetian republic est Quarantine Council with 3 official representatives with permanent public functions
1945 - during a conference in SanFranthe draft made in Dumbarton Oaks was considered and a decision to establish the WHO asap was made.
22nd July 1946 - contract for the creation of WHO is signed
WHO constitution gained the required ratifications (26 countries) and came into force on 7th April 1948 → Now - World Health Day
Bg joined 9th June 1948
At present 194 countries
What is public health
international collaboration?
- public health international collaboration involves
neighbouring and world nations that come together to
protect and improve the health of their population as
well as prevent any worsening of conditions
What is the Objective of WHO?
-Who is the United Nation’s special agency for health
its objective is:
- The attainment by all people of the highest level of
health.
- Current objective is attainment by all people of the
world by the year 2000 of a level of health that will
permit them to lead a socially and economically
productive life à Known as Health for All Strategy

What activities WHO
undertakes?
The work of the WHO is divided into two major
Categories:
1. The central services:
- gathering epidemiologic information
- development of international health agreements.
- standardisation of vaccines and pharmaceuticals
- dissemination of knowledge through meetings of
experts
- technical reports.
2. Services to governments:
- provision of support to interregional and
intraregional projects:
- coordination of the work of WHO collaborating
centres, laboratories, and institutes.

General assembly - meet annually in Geneva → attended by delegates from all member countries
Executive Board → 32 members → meet twice a year
Secretariat - 3800 employers working at HQ and regional offices

citizens of all countries to obtain a health level that leads to a fruitful life socially and economically.
