2. What is nature Flashcards
What is nativism
Nativism are people who take an extreme position in regards to genetics.
They argue that the social characteristics of people have arisen through evolution.
This leads to the idea that women are hard-wired to be domestic while men are dominant.
What is the nature theory
This is a theory that views human behaviour as being promoted by biology rather than society for example: Boys will be Boys.
This argument is supported through the position of people being governed by instincts.
What are biological imperatives
Biological imperatives support the nature theory as animals will have certain biological imperatives that helps them survive which humans also share for example: eating and sleeping
Nature theories suggest that humans are ruled by biological imperatives and therefore, have no free will as we are programmed to survive
What is the nurture theory
The nurture theory is a view that society and culture override human genetics and instincts and that social expectations lead to humans controlling their actions.
for example: we all eat but we eat according to our cultures.
Sociologists argue that cultural imperatives override biology as we learn culture
What are feral children
This is an argument that is favoured by those who support the nurture theory.
Children who have not received correct socialisation are known as feral children. There are cases of children being deprived of human society, nature theory states they should act in a human fashion because behaviour is instinctive but they don’t.
Example of feral child
Ivan Mishukov, a six-year-old boy born in Reutov, Russia, was rescued by the police in 1998 from wild dogs, who he lived with for two years.
