#2 What Are Plants Made of? Flashcards
Stem Cells
> Unspecialized cells that can become anything
Human ones are mostly used in embryos while plants are always making new ones in comparison
How did plants evolve?
Plants evolved from single-celled organism vs humans are multicellular
Apical Meristem
Cluster of stem cells at the tip of every stem and root
Lateral Meristem
Allows roots and stems to thicken as plant grows
Three main organs of plants
leaves, stems, roots
Vascular Plants Have
leave, stems, roots
Stems
Structural framework typically above ground, transports water and sugar
Leaves
> Photosynthesize, often flat and wide for more surface area
Green in color because it’s more efficient in harvesting light. Have chloroplasts, cells that process light
Phyllotaxy
Pattern in which leaves grow around stem
Bud
Were leaves meet the stem. New meristem, potential to grow into a branch
Bulbs
Mostly leaves around modified stem. Swell up to store food for winter
How to remember plant organs
If plant organ has another organ, usually a stem. If there’s a bud it’s a leaf, not stem
