- greece & turkey war
lon did nothing - france invaded the ruhr in germany
why did japan invade manchuria?
japan was suffering economic problems
manchuria is an easy way to expand and gain raw resources
trade was valuable
what did the chinese and lon do?
chine appealed to lon to stop the japan invasion. lon reports and blames japan. japan left lon and continued to invade manchuria
3 reasons why lon failed to act over manchuria
- depression (britain & france facing economic crisis ; war was not affordable)
- logistics (britain does not want to send its navy and territories against a strong enemy ; they had to sacrifice their own men & the pontential cost which was not worth it
- self interest (britain & usa wanted to keep trading with japan ; sees themselves as a potential ally against ussr)
what is the world disarmament conference?
it is a series of conferences put forward by lon aimed at reducing the size of armies around the world
hitler’s goals of the world disarmament conference
wanted other lon countries to either disarm their armies to germany’s size or germany rearms their army to the size of the other countries
why did france reject hitler? (world disarmament conference)
france needed a larger army than germany to prevent another invasion (germany invaded france in 1871&1914)
hitler’s reactions to the rejection of his goals in the world disarmament conference
he pulls out of lon and begins rearming
why did the lon not do anything about abyssinia ?
- lon wanted italy as an ally
- trade : by supplying oil to italy , the lon earns more money
- military logistics : italy had a large navy and britain didn’t want to risk a war
- timing : depression & hitler’s rise to power , lon did not want to risk war & germany and italy might become allies
hoare-laval pact
- british and france gives italy 2/3 of abyssinia
- lon’s integrity suffered blow as two of the most powerful nations have been caught trying to divide a weak country and giving to an aggressor
(lon should prevent and not encourage) - hitler benefits from the invasion of abyssinia ( britain and france are too busy w abyssinia , so he takes his chance and conquers rhineland ; he also knows that britain and france will try to avoid war)
why did the lon fail?
- absence of the usa & other major powers
- germany joined in 1926 , russia in 1934 when germany left, japan left 1933, italy left 1937
- usa rejected lon & both peace treaties ; undermining the economic & military power of lon - lon had no army of its own
- military action -> britain & france, but they were reluctant to act & were weakened by ww1 - britain & france placed their own self interest above support of lon
- they don’t take disarmament seriously
- they were out of step & couldn’t accept each other’s policy - lon’s decision making was inefficient and slow
- infrequent meetings
- difficult to get everyone to agree
