- Nominal Independence for countries like China
- Protectorates, local govt continue, but Finance, defence and foreign relations are in the hand of the Western power
- Colonies
- Japan, considered “civilised” but had to abide by Western rules.
What were some of the causes the new Modern Order?
There were many factors such as democratisation, scientific advances, capitalism, etc. But overall, three key factors stand out:
- Industrialisation
- Bureaucracy / Rational State
- Imperialism
