0 - From International Politics to World Politics Flashcards
What is Globalization?
It is the process of increasing interconnectedness among societies such that events in one part of the world increasingly have effects on peoples and societies far away.
For some, it is the ideology associated with the current phase of the world economy → Neoliberalism
What is a Theory?
It is a kind of simplifying device that allows you to decide which historical or contemporary facts matter more than others when trying to develop and understanding of the world.
The analogy is ‘using sunglasses with different-coloured lenses’
What is an Explanatory Theory?
It is one that sees the world as something external to our theories of it.
What are Constitutive Theories?
They are those which posit that our theories actually help construct the world. They defend that our theories about the world shape how we act, and thereby make those theories self-confirming.
Which are Explanatory Theories?
Realist and Liberal theories tend to be explanatory. They try to uncover regularities in human behaviour and thereby explain the social world.
