2 reasons why w/c more likely to join sects Flashcards
marginality - weber
sects provide theodicy of disprivilege - religious explanation for low position in society - a test from god and they’ll be rewarded in the afterlife
sects give a sense of community and belonging because they’re close knit - nation of islam recuited young, black w/c men
marginality criticism
sects are short lived - protestant work ethic effect means members are encouraged to work hard but once they gain benefits of this, they’re no longer marginalised and so leave the sect.
relative deprivation - stark and bainbridge
w/c feel materially deprived and sects offer compensators for what they lack on earth by promising rewards in afterlife so they join world rejecting sects
relative deprivation criticism
ignores m/c who can also experience relative deprivation.
