The island was originally called the Queen Charlotte Islands and was changed to Haida Gwaii which means island of the people. This change was made in 2010
Define Physiography
Describes the earth’s suface. This includes mountains and valleys, the way rivers flow, and the way in which land erodes
Define a mountain
A land feature sufficiently elevated above the surrounding land if more than ~300m (~1000 ft.)
Define Cordillera
An extensive series of more or less parallel ranges on mountains ( with there associated valleys, basins, plains, plateaus, rivers, and lakes
What are two things that occur if something is considered a mountain?
Worthy of a distinctive name and characterized by a restricted summit area (AKA a peak)
Define the Canadian cordillera
The name for the mountains of western Canada and includes not only the mountain and plateau region but also the submerged regions on the continental shelf and slope
What physiographic region is Calgary in?
Interior Plains and close to the Cordillera
Where in the Cordillera is the Rocky Mountains and what does it look?
