2 Persuasion and power Flashcards
Manipulation
A communicative and interactional practice, in which a manipulator exercises control over other people, usually against their will or against their best interests. Manipulation involves abuse of power and domination. It implies the exercise of illegitimate influence by means of discourse: manipulators make others believe and do things that are in the interest of the manipulator, and against the best interests of the manipulated
Persuasion sustainability
Much like environmental sustainability, the idea of sustainability in persuasion refers to the degree to which a persuasive act is performed for the sake of the persuaded together with the persuader, with both of their interests matching. Also defined as the capability to reach foreseen sustainable goals with a great degree of satisfaction obtained for all the parties involved.
How to establish the level of sustainability
- The relationship between participants and their roles: asymmetrical vs. symmetrical
- The way the persuader tries to persuade: sharing vs. hoarding knowledge
- The aim of the persuasion: is it aimed at bettering the other’s wellbeing
Conditions to evaluate sustainability
- free to move and act
- In full possession of their faculties
- Self sufficient
Red queen
Apparently strong, despotic and manipulative, but practically weak and short lived because it relies on fear and it doesn’t imply the “liking effect”
Keywords: hatred, violence
White queen
Apparently weak, gentle and delicate, but practically stronger as it moves more deeply, it is more resistant and independent. It relies on reliance, respect, wisdom and lovability. This power makes use of charisma and the liking effect
Keywords: love, dialogue
