2- Organs and Systems Flashcards
what is the stem?
the stem is the organ which holds up leaves.
it carries minerals and water to the leaves, and food around the plant
it is important for nutrition, excretion and growth
what is the flower?
the flower contains the organs of plant sexual reproduction
it attracts insects needed to carry the pollen between plants to allow pollination
it is therefore important for reproduction
what is the leaf?
where photsynthesis happens
contain chlorphyll which uses light energy to chance carbon dioxide and water into glucose
they have tiny little pores which allow essential carbon dioxide in
leaves are important for nutrition and excretion
what is the root?
the root is the organ which provides anchorage for the plant
with its root hairs it provides a large surface area to take in water and minerals
the root is important for nutrition
digestive system
digestion breaks food down into simpler substances
it takes place in the alimentary canal
digested food is absorbed into the blood
the respiratory system
taking in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide
air enters the lungs by movement of the rib muscles and diaphragm
oxygen is absorbed into the blood
the excretory system
removed waste, some of which is poisonous
waste material is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and made into urine
this is stored in the bladder and released via the urethra
the circulatory system
the heart pumps blood around the body
it supplies cells with oxygen and food, then carries away wastes like carbon dioxide
the reproductive system
this is for producing offspring
eggs are produced by the ovaries in a female
sperm are produced by the testes of a male. they then fertilise the eggs
the nervous system
eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin
^all contain nerves which send messages to the brai
the brain produces a response which it sends via other nerves to muscles or glands
the endocrine system
this system produces chemicals called hormones and secretes them into the bloodstream
a number of glands around the body do this
hormones control things like growth or sexual characteristics and also bodily functions such as menstruation
the skeletal system
there are 206 bones in our body.
some bones provide a tough barrier to protect delicate organs
muscles are attached to bones. they contract and relax, allowing movement
