What do we need to protect?
Oceans, rivers, animals, forests
Food chain
A food chain describes how energy and nutrients move through an ecosystem
Producer
They produce their own food using carbon dioxide and water
Consumer
Things that eat other living things (herbivores, omnivores or carnivores)
Primary consumer
organisms which eat producers (herbivores)
Secondary consumer
organisms that eat primary consumers (carnivores)
Tertiary consumers
Organisms that eat secondary consumers (carnivores)
Food web
Consists of all the food chains in a single ecosystem
Habitat
Place an organism lives that contains all the things it needs to thrive
Abiotic
Non-living parts of a habitat e.g. temperature, water, sun
Biotic
Living parts of a habitat e.g. food, plants, animals, trees
Adaptation
Process whereby a species evolves characteristics that enable it to survive in a particular habitat
Physical adaptations
- A changing feature of a living thing that helps it to survive in a particular environment
- Changes usually happen vary over a very long time (years).
Behavioural adaptations
- A thing that a living does to survive in a particular environment e.g. the way they feed, breed or move
