2. Obedience Flashcards
1
Q
Who and when was Obedience researched?
A
- milgram
- 1963
2
Q
What were the aims of Milgrams research?
A
- to design a procedure to assess obedience levels
3
Q
Outline the procedure in Milgrams original research
A
- 40 American men volunteered
- research took place in a lab in Yale University
- when each participant arrived they were introduced to another “participant” who was a confederate
- there was a “teacher” that was introduced to the pair that was infact the experimenter
- teacher had to give the learner an electric shock each time an incorrect answer was given
- the teacher believed this was a memory test
- the shocks got worse and could have killed the “other participant” who was in fact the confederate
4
Q
what did Milgram do before the study?
A
- he asks 14 psychology students to predict the findings
- the students estimated that no more than 3% of the participants will supply 450 volts
5
Q
what are the strengths of the study?
A
- Research support (Beauvois et al) found a game show study proved the same results
6
Q
what are the limitations of the study?
A
- Low Internal Validity- Milgram said that 75% of people thought they were play acting, but scientists believe they were play acting and fulfilling demand characteristics
COUNTERPOINT research from Sheriden and King support Milgram as 100% believed they supplied real shocks to puppies - Milgrams conclusions and theories are not justified
