Sustainable
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Communicable diseases
Any condition that is passed to an individual from their environment (including from other people, air, water, food or insects)
Define Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR)
The number of mothers who die as a result of pregnancy, childbirth or associated treatment (within 6 weeks of delivery) per 100, 000 women who give birth.
What is safe water?
Water NOT contaminated with disease-causing pathogens e.g. bacteria, viruses or chemicals = ‘safe for (human) consumption’
What does the term ‘sanitation’ refer to?
Removal of hazardous material from the environment e.g. flushing toilet for safe disposal of human waste, and maintenance of hygienic conditions e.g. garbage collection.
Aid
Assistance given to countries or communities in the event of a crisis OR for the development of long-term sustainable improvements
Poverty
The deprivation or lack of essential resources; a limited ability to AFFORD e.g. food, shelter, clean water, healthcare, education
