2. Neurons Flashcards
Three things that the nervous system work to achieve?
- communication - with other organs
- integration - work together to achieve the same thing
- co-ordination - working at different times to achieve the same thing
what does the peripheral nervous system consist of?
consist of all the nerves attached to the central nervous system (cranial and spinal)
what are afferent nerves?
they are sensory neurons which carry messages towards the CNS
contains the somatic and visceral centres
what are efferent nerves?
motor neurons which carry messages away from the central nervous system
contains the
- automatic (sympathetic and parasympathetic) and somatic nervous systems
what are neurons?
they are the basic structural unit of the nervous system
what are connector neurons?
connect neurons together
can nerve impulses travel in different directions?
no, they can only travel in one direction.
how do the travel though the body?
nerve impulses travel from dendrites t the cell body, and then from the cell body to the axon
