1. The central nervous system Flashcards
Name all the lobes is the brain
Frontal
Parietal
Tempal
Occipital
How is the CNS protected?
- Bones -cranium and vertebral canal
- The meninges
- Cerebrospinal fluid
Layers and function of the meninges
Three layers - dura matter, Pia matter - and arachnoid
Cushions cerebral cortex against the cranium.
Function of cerebrospinal fluids
- Protection - acts as a shock absorber
- Support - buoyancy
- Transport nutrition–> oxygen and glucose into cells / co2 and toxins out of cells
How is cerebrospinal fluid formed?
Formed from blood in brain ventricles.
Contains few cells and some glucose, protein, urea and salts.
What’s done with excess cerebrospinal fluid?
It’s reabsorbed back into blood vessels
What is white matter?
Myelinated
What is grey matter
Unmyelinated
Structure of the cerebrum?
- Consist of all the lobes - parietal, temporal, occipital and frontal
- Consist of 2-4mm of grey matter on the out side
- White matter on the inside
- Basal ganglia (grey matter) in the internal cerebrum
What is the central nervous system consist of?
Th brain and the spinal cord
Functions of the cerebral cortex?
- Thinking, reasoning, and learning.
- Memory
- Intelligence
- Sense of responsibility
- Perception of sense
- Imitation and control of voluntary muscle contractions
3 functions of tracks?
- Connect cortex areas within the same hemisphere.
- Connect left and right hemispheres
- Connect cortex to other parts of the brain or to the spinal cord
Functional areas of the cerebral cortex
- Sensory areas - interpret inputs from receptors
- Motor areas - control muscular movement
- Association areas - concerned with intellectual and emotional process
What is the corpus callosum?
Wide band of tissue fibres that lies underneath the cerebrum at the base of the longitudinal fissure.
Nerve fibres connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain
Where is the hypothalamus?
Middle of the brain
