2. Mutagenic Agents Flashcards
Define mutagenic agent
Increase the rate of mutation occurring
UvRadiation
Imposing radiation
Viruses
Name 3 ways in which mutagens agents increase rate of mutations
- Acting as a base
- Altering bases
- Changing structure of dna
- Acting as a base
Chemicals called base analogs can substitute for a base during dna replication
This changes the base sequence in new dna
Example of acting as a base
5- bromouracil is a base analog that can substitute for thymine
Pairs with guanine ( not adenine ) causing substitution mutation in new dna
- Altering bases
Some chemicals delete or alter bases
Alkayating agents add alkyl group to guanine which changes the structure so that it pairs with thymine ( not cytosine )
- Changing the structure of dna
Radiation can change structure of dna causing problems with dna replication
Uv radiation can cause adjacent thymine bases to pair up
