2 Muscles Flashcards
What types of muscles can contract and relax independently?
striated muscles, aka skeletal and cardiac
List the layers of tissue of a muscle from outermost to innermost
Epimysium, Perimysium, Endomysium, muscle fiber
What part of the sarcolemma contains only thin filaments?
I band
What part of the sarcolemma contains only thick filaments?
H zone
What part of the sarcolemma contains thick filaments linked with accessory proteins such as Titin & Nebulin (holds myofilament in place)
M line
At the outer edge of this band (located in the sarcolemma) thick and thin filaments overlap
A band
How does calcium play in the contractile process?
During contraction, ca2+ binds to troponin which removes tropomyosin to uncover the myosin-binding site on actin
How does tropomyosin play in the contractile process?
During the relaxed state, tropomyosin partially blocks the myosin binding site on actin
What’s the difference between isometric and isotonic contraction?
Isometric muscle contract, no movement. Isotonic same force
