2- Living Cells Flashcards
3 Parts of signal transduction
Reception, transduction and response
What is the cell wall composed of
Primarily peptidoglycan
What is the nucleoid?
Functional compartment in prokaryotic cells, centrally located and contains the circular chromosome and small DNA plasmids
What are inclusion bodies?
Compartments of prokaryotic cells that are granules containing organic or inorganic compounds
What are pili?
For attachment and sex on prokaryotes
What is the Edocytic Cycle for?
For recycling and remodeling of membranes
Bending in cilia and flagella occurs via which molecular motor, and are powered by what?
Dynein and ATP
Plasma membranes can be involved in what two metabolic processes?
- photosynthesis
- respiration
What does the endomembrane system do?
Increases surface area for chemical reactions
What is glycocalyx?
Extracellular polymeric material (eg. glycoproteins).
What organelle are lipids biosynthesized in?
The smooth ER
Where do vesicles originate from? (3 sources)
- ER
- Golgi
- Via endocytosis
What are the enzymes found in lysosomes called?
Acid hydrolases. They degrade debris in cells and are involved in autophagy
True or false (for each individually)?
- Mitochondria have their own DNA
- Mitochondria have their own ribosomes
- True
2. True
What is a peroxisome?
A small organelle containing oxidative enzymes. Detoxifies peroxides (eg. H2O2)
