2 Learning from Existing Products and Practice Flashcards
(14 cards)
Describe what is meant by a Disruptive technology
A Disruptive technology is a new emerging technology that unexpectedly displaces an established one. Recent examples of disruptive technologies include smart phones, 3D printing, artificual intelligence, VR, nano-technology and e-commerce retailing.
Define enterprise (DT specs definition)
The quality of activity of having a progressive approach that demonstrates initiative, resourcefulness and willingness to undertake new and challenging projects, despite the risks involved.
Describe incrimental innovation
A series of small improvements to an existing product that aims to improve its competitive position over time. Incremental innovation is regularly used within high-tech businesses to ensure products include new features that are desired by consumers.
Define innovation
The process of using design thinking to create new products or improve existing ones. It involves applying technology to meet user needs and improve their experience.
Other - Innovation in the context of this qualification refers to learners considering new methods or ideas to improve and refine their design solutions and meet the needs of their intended market and/or primary user.

Describe product adjustment considerations in terms of analysing and evaluating existing products
Product adjustment uses anthropometric data to increase the inclusivity of products
* Product adjustment: can differing users adjust the product?
* Ease of adjustment: do users understand how to adjust the product to meet their needs?
* Auto adjustment: are standardised adjustments suitable for different users?
* Material options: has the suitability of different materials been tested for a wide range of users?
* Data analysis: analysing data may identify ways to address issues where the use of the product has resulted in injuries or accidents.
* Specialist equipment and software: ergonomic evaluation software can be used to assess human movement, strength and ability to perform tasks over a specified amount of time.
What is inbound and outbound marketing
- inbound marketing - market research
- outbound marketing - uses the marketing mix to promote a brand or new product
What does the the Advertising Standards Agency ensure adverts are?
Legal, decent, honest, truful, not misleading or offensive
Product launch
Prior to launch companies must ensure the product is ready for
consumers. They will carefully check the following factors:
* Is all the research complete?
* Is all the testing complete?
* Is a competitor releasing a similar product at the same time?
* How will the new product compare to existing products to ensure it gains a market share and sales traction?
Determining the right timing depends on whether, at launch time, the product is:
- offering relevant & unique features
- showing product superiority to the competition
- available to purchase.
Raising awareness of the product depends on effective communication tactics which may include the use of:
* press releases
* social media
* product testing by companies such as Which?
Give examples of new and emerging technologies
- AI - generative design
- Biometrics -e.g. hyundaui GV70, in car payments, turn on ignition
- VR - visualise prototypes, immersive testing
- Drones - delivery
- Materials - graphene - bioplastics (e.g. Ford Escape soy-based floor mats)
Give examples of how the societal trend towards favouring sustainability has influenced product design
Vegan imitation leather polyurethane interior in Range Rover – partnership with Ultrafabrics – 99% of solvents recaptured during production – low volatile organic compounds
EVs, Hybrid systems, regenerative breaking
Describe cubism and its influence on product design with examples
Nissan Cube – Designed largely by Jonh Sahs
Tesla Cyber truck - Franz von Holzhausen
Describe minamilism and its influence on product design with examples
Popular in 1960 / 1970s US. Characterised by a ‘less is more’ philosophy, simplicity, ease of use, clean lines, monochromatic palette.
* Jonathan Ives - Apple watch, iPhone X. Ives joined Ferrari in 2021 – Roma (flush door handles), Monza SP2 reflect minimalist design.
* L460 (2023) LR Range Rover – ‘hidden until lit’ indicators – flush window glazing – flush door handles
* Tesla – Minimal buttons – interior, no gear stick
Describe Bauhaus and its influence on product design with examples
German Design school & art movement operational from 1919 to 1933. Functionality, uncluttered aesthetics & mass production
Modern inspired products
Nike Bauhaus sneakers
Steve job – first iPod – simple
Minimalist design
