privileged position of protestant church was resented by the catholic majority
12% of country belonged to COI - and it was still the established church. (Act of union 1800)
Disestablishment bill:
Jan 1st 1871 church of ireland was to become a voluntary body with no connection to the state
The legal connection broken
Church of ireland property confiscated and given to the church temporalities commission.
Land purchase clause would give tenants on Church of Ireland lands the option of buying their own holdings.

Link between state and church broken however church received financial assistance as compensation
