2 Haemodynamics Flashcards
What is blood serum?
Blood plasma without clotting factors
Name a condition which affects whole blood viscosity
- Polycythaemia
- Thrombocythaemia
- Leukaemia
What does meauring plasma viscosity give us an indication of?
Inflammation
What’s the difference between Laminar and Turbulent flow?
Laminar: smooth, maintaining energy
Turbulent: disorganised, energy= lost
(stenosed arteries and ventricles)
What units are used for ‘flow’?
Volume transferred per unit time
L/min
What is conductance?
Measure of ease of flow
What is Darcy’s law?
If resistance increases- pressure is changed to maintain flow
Which blood vessels contribute most to the overall peripheral resistance in the body?
Smallest arteries and arterioles
Is resistance lower in the pulmonary or systemic circulatory systems?
Pulmonary (shorter and wider vessels)
Fill in the missing gaps in the following equations:
What is the ‘pulse’ we feel?
Shock wave before blood arrives
What 2 factors is pulse pressure governed by?
- Vol of ejected blood
- Compliance of arterial system
What condition may cause a ‘bounding pulse’?
- Heart block (bradycardia)
- Vasodilation (hot bath/pregnancy)
- Elite athletes
- CO2 retention
What are the 3 factors which affect resistance in blood vessels?
- Diameter (quantitively most important)
- Vessel length
- Viscosity
What are Korotkoff sounds?
Sounds due to noise of turbulent flow
