What are they gerunds and infinitives

A

Gerunds (verb + -ing) and infinitives (to + verb) are used depending on the main verb of the sentence.

✅ When do we use the Gerund (-ing)?

A

After verbs like enjoy, like, hate, love, finish, stop, suggest, mind, keep, avoid

I enjoy playing football.
She suggested going to the cinema.
After prepositions (before, after, by, without…)

✅ When do we use the Infinitive (to + verb)?

A
  • After verbs like want, need, decide, plan, hope, learn, agree, promise, refuse

She decided to study medicine.
I want to buy a new phone.
- After adjectives (happy, difficult, important…)

It’s important to be on time.
⚠️ Some verbs can be followed by both gerund or infinitive with a change in meaning (stop, remember, forget, try).
