What are the code of ethics set by the governing engineering body in BC?

A

EGBC code of ethics:
1. Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public, the protection of the environment, and promote health and safety within the workspace
(THIS CODE OVERRULES ALL OTHERS!)

  1. Only accept assignments in areas where you are qualified by training or experience.
  2. Base professional opinions on adequate knowledge and honest conviction.
  3. Act with loyalty to clients or employers, maintain confidentiality, and disclose conflicts of interest promptly.
  4. Ensure appropriate and fair compensation for professional work.
  5. Maintain competence, advance knowledge, and support professional growth for yourself and others.
  6. Treat others with fairness, courtesy, and honesty, giving credit where it is due.
  7. Clearly communicate the consequences if professional judgments are ignored or overruled.
  8. Report hazardous, illegal, or unethical practices to the proper authorities.
  9. Promote public understanding and protect the integrity of the profession.

- P. Eng. registration can be transferred to other provinces, so u usually stay licensed once you obtain it
- one can hold more than one P. Eng. from other provinces

  1. Academic (4-year degree)
    - might be asked to write a technical exam (not common)
  2. Pass the law and ethics exam
    (note, your record is kept for at least 15 years)
  3. language and good character (knows how to write well, references, interview)
  4. Minimum of 4 years of experience
