2 - Equilibrium Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium?
Forward and backward reactions are occurring at equal rates, the reaction is continuous and the concentration of reactants and products stays the same.
What is Le Chatelier’s principle?
That if an external condition is changed the equilibrium will oppose it
Effect of equilibrium with increased temp
Increase temp will shift towards the endothermic side so that more energy is taken to reduce the temp.
Effect of equilibrium with increased pressure
Increase pressure will shift towards the side with fewer moles of gas to oppose this and reduce the pressure. With no difference in moles, pressure will not effect the equilibrium.
Effect of equilibrium with increasing concentration of ions
Will oppose it and shift to side to reduce the number of increased ions.
What effect do catalysts have on equilibrium?
No effect, but will speed up the rate at which equilibrium is achieved. Does not effect the position of equilibrium as both reactions occur at the same rate.
How to calculate the equilibrium constant
Products over reactants, square the atoms by their moles
