1 - Redox Flashcards
What is a redox reaction?
A reaction involving both reduction and oxidation
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons
What is reduction?
The gain of electrons
What is an oxidising agent?
Electron acceptors - oxidises another species by removing electrons - are reduced themselves
What is a reducing agent?
Electron donors - reduces another species by adding electrons to them - are oxidised themselves
What is disproportionation?
When an element is simultaneously reduced and oxidised in a reaction.
In half equations which side do electrons go on each side of the equation in oxidation and reduction?
Oxidation –> Products
Reduction –> Reactants
Rules for combining half equations?
Electrons must balance on each side
Atoms must balance
Charges must balance
Common Oxidising agents
Concentrated sulphuric acid (H2SO4)
Potassium Dichromate (K2Cr2O7)
Chlorine (Cl2)
Common Reducing agents
Hydrogen (H2)
Carbon (C)
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
