2. Energy levels in atoms Flashcards
What is the electron volt?
The electron bolt is defined as the kinetic energy carried by an electron volt after it has been accelerated from rest through a potential difference of 1 volt
What is the ground state?
The ground state is the lowest energy level an electron can be in
What does it mean when an electron is excited?
This means that it is in a higher energy level than the ground state
what is the process of Excitation?
Excitation occurs when an electron absorbs a photon with the exact energy difference between the two levels, causing the electron to move up to the next energy level.
What is Ionisation?
Ionisation is what happens when an electron leaves an atom.
What is Ionisation energy
The Ionisation energy of an atom is the amount of energy needed to remove an electron from the ground state.
What is a Line Spectrum?
A line spectrum is what you get when you split the light from a fluorescent tube using a diffraction grating, They show the different wavelengths of light emitted by a source.
How does the line spectrum prove the discrete energy level nature of the electron?
THe line spectra provides evidence that the electrons in atoms exist in discrete energy levels through the fact that atoms can only emit photons of specific energies (and wavelengths through the equation E = hλ/c, where h and c are constants), and because of this electrons can only absorb photons of these specific energy levels.
What is a continuos spectra?
A continuous spectra is what is seen when you put White light through a diffraction grating, they exist because the electrons are not confined to energy levels in the object producing the spectra and are free.
What are line absorption spectra?
Line absorption Spectra are what you get when light of a continuos spectrum of energy passes through a cool gas.
How can a LIne absorption spectra be used to identify a gas?
they can be used to determine the gas since there will be wavelengths missing from the produced spectrum, which coincide with specific photons which were absorbed by the electrons of the gas, and as energy levels are unique to the atom, you can use this to identify the gas.
