Elevation views are vertical views showing primarily what the outside of the building looks like, while plan views are horizontal views which are used primarily to show how the room, etc., on a given floor inside the building will look. A roof plan would be an exception to the common use of plan views.

Plan views usually show the size and shape of the building; size, shape and arrangement of rooms; thickness of outside walls and partitions, and materials to be used; location, size and type of doors, windows or other openings; location and size of parts of the structures, such as footings, areaways, chimneys, stairways, etc.; location, size and direction of beams and joists; location and size pipe chases; location of mechanical equipment, plumbing fixtures, radiators,etc.; and auxiliary information in the form of notes or specifications regarding structural details, mechanical equipment, accessories, etc.
