Q

Explain how co transport is used to transport sodium ions and glucose into cells in the mammalian ileum across their cell membranes?

A

Sodium ions are actively transported from the ileum epithelial cells into the blood.
By the sodium-potassium pump
This creates a concentration gradient of sodium ions between the lumen of the ileum and the interior of the epithelial cells
Sodium ions diffuse down this concentration gradient into the epithelial cells
By sodium glucose co transporter proteins
The co transport proteins transport glucose into the cells along with sodium ions.
