2 - Brain Story Flashcards
What are the 3 characteristics that evolve from child development?
1.) Interdependence
2.) Prevention
3.) Ingenuity
How is life lifelong health shaped?
through early experiences in the earliest years of life. It is conducted by the brain architecture.
What does the brain architecture affect in early life experiences?
It affects behaviour, learning and lifelong physical and mental health, including addiction
How is the brain developed in the brain system?
Through a hierarchical progression:
1.) Regulation
2.) Sensory
3.) Relevance
4.) Executive
What are the characteristics of the executive portion of brain systems?
- Motor planning
- Plan & sequence
- Theory of mind
- Language
What are the characteristics of regulation portion of brain systems?
- Nutrition
- Sleep/wake cycle
- Stress & stress recovery
What are the characteristics of the sensory portion of brain systems?
- Sensations
- Processing & modulation
- Speech
What are the characteristics of the relevance portion of brain systems?
- Emotions
- Memories
- Meaning making
As we increase in age, what occurs to the brain’s ability to change in response to experiences?
A decrease in ability of the brain to change occurs.
As we age, what occurs to the amount of effort needed for change in the brain?
The amount of effort needed for brain changes to occur as we get older becomes increasingly harder.
What does the skill beget skill concept imply?
It parallels skills to help construct brain circuitry and solidifies it. Skills require a foundational building block for higher levels to develop.
How does the “serve & return” concept help develop the brain?
It helps develop the brain architecture of the child’s brain through the interaction of the caregiver and the child.
Serve: in which the child reaches out for an interaction
Return: in which the caregiver responds to the action
What is the role of a primary caregiver in self-regulation with the child?
They are responsible for amplifying joy or softening negative emotions for the child. They regulate stress responses to maximize states of alert processing.
What would occur to the child if the child experiences dysregulation within interactions with the child?
It would lead to problems in areas of development, and physical and mental health.
