2. Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
What are the two major divisions of the ANS?
- Sympathetic
- Parasympathetic
What is the basic action of the Sympathetic Division of ANS?
-Fight or flight (or freeze)
-Catabolic
What is the basic action of the Parasympathetic Division?
-Rest and Digest (feed and breed)
-Homeostatic
Define Catabolic
Encourages the expenditure of energy
Define Homeostatic
Encourages the maintenance of normal processes
Location of the Sympathetic Division
Thoracic & Lumbar Spinal Cord
Location of the Parasympathetic Division
Brainstem and Sacral Spinal Cord
(mostly comes from vagus nerve)
Sympathetic Division:
Length and Location of PRE/POSTganglionic fibers
-originate in thoracic & lumbar spinal cord
-pre: short fibers
-post: long fibers
-ganglia are close to spinal cord
Parasympathetic Division:
Length and Location of PRE/POSTganglionic fibers
-originate in brain stem/sacral spinal cord
-pre: long
-post: short
-ganglia are within or near visceral effector organs
