2. Anatomy Terminology (Skeleton) Flashcards
- Identify areas on a bone (VIN)
Recall the name for the skeleton describing the centre of the animal (Trunk & Head)
Axial Skeleton
Recall the name for the skeleton describing the regions attached to the trunk (Limbs)
Appendicular Skeleton
Recall the six types of bones
Long Irregular
Short Pneumonic
Flat Sesamoid
Provide the function of long bones and provide an example
Resist compression when loaded
Act as levers
Resist tension during muscle contraction
eg Humerus & Femur
Provide the function of short bones and provide an example
Act to disseminate forces more evenly during weigh bearing
eg Phalanges
Provide the function of irregular bones and provide an example
Jutting processes for attachments of tendons and ligaments
eg Vertebrae
Provide the function of flat bones and provide an example
Act as attachment surfaces for soft tissues and protect underlying tissues
eg Pelvis & Scapula
Provide the function of pneumonic bones (contact air spaces) and provide an example
Help aid respiration
eg flat bones of the skull forming the paranasal sinuses
Provide the function of sesamoid bones and provide an example
Provides additional strength and reduces wear on joints. Also provide attachments for ligaments & tendons
eg Proximal & Distal sesamoid bones and the patella
